Breakworld

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Breakworld is a fictional planet first mentioned during the first arc of the new Astonishing X-men series by Joss Whedon. It is the Home World of the villain Ord who came to earth to avert the prophecy that a mutant would destroy the planet.

[edit] Culture

The Breakworld is a barren setting, its atmosphere is hard for humans to live in and as of late there have been many deaths and especially amongst children. The death toll is so high that a special mass tomb/ funeral home has been constructed by the people despite the apparently illegal status of funerals and mourning. The dead bodies are sent floating into the air on bed-like devices into an energy field where they are destroyed.

The Breakworld is a war world and controlled by a militant force. It has extremely sensetive scanners and a huge fleet of battle cruisers. The leaders apparently have no qualms with public executions and torture.

According to Kitty Pryde the alloys of Breakworld are different from any on earth as she has great difficulty in phasing through them.

The people of the Breakworld also beleive heavily in the power of their Augers to a very sensetive level. The Augers are apparently oracles who predict events a long time before they occur and have predicted that an X-man will come and destroy the Breakworld. They have believed this for a long time and even constructed a stone tablet to demonstrate the Auger's visions. The Augers are extremely gifted at their predictions, so much so that Agent Brand of S.W.O.R.D has given great credence to what they predict.

[edit] Relations with Earth

The Breakworld only communicated with Earth when the Augers gave them information on where to find the harbinger of their destruction. Ord was dispatched to the planet to communicate firstly with S.W.O.R.D to gain their aid and a form of diplomatic immunity.

He next sought out Kavita Rao and gave her information she needed to complete her research into the "Hope" drug that "cured" mutants of their X-gene. With this he hoped to erradicate all mutants and thus eliminate the threat. He even brought Colossus back to life in order to use him as a test puppet.
