"Breaking Up the Girl" was the third single from beautifulgarbage, the third album by Garbage, released worldwide in April 2002.
In North America it was the second and final single to be taken from the album, released in conjunction with its appearance on the soundtrack to the MTV movie Daria: Is It College Yet?
"Breaking Up the Girl" was one of Garbage's least successful singles. It garnered negative reviews, failed to chart in the United States, and slipped to #60 in its second week on the UK chart before falling out altogether.

"Breaking Up the Girl" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 2000 sessions for beautifulgarbage.
An upbeat number, "Breaking Up the Girl" glides along sultry, sad and dreamy, driven by big bass, big drums and practically recognisable acoustic guitar's.
Bass on this track is played by Daniel Schulman and the lyric "I'm afraid there is much to be afraid of" was lifted from the long poem Western Swing witten by Andrew Greig and published by Bloodaxe Books.

"Breaking Up the Girl" was released as the second airplay track from beautifulgarbage in the US in December 2001. It was issued as a single in other territories in April 2002.
In Australia it reached the top 20, peaking at 19, while in the UK it fell out of the charts after peaking at number 27.

The video for the single, shot by Francis Lawrence in Los Angeles over two days in December 2001, premiered on January 21st 2002, before the first airing of MTV's Daria: Is It College Yet?. As the track was the movie's theme song a video was aired including footage from the Daria show.
In the UK, Europe and Australia however, a non-Daria version was aired. The video featured the Shirley sitting on a car...but not driving.

"Breaking Up the Girl" remixes were completed for the band by UK DJs and song-writers Brothers In Rhythm and German House/Trance artist Timo Maas.
The band also recorded an acoustic version of the song, which appeared on the single B-side.
[edit] Live performances
"Breaking Up the Girl" was first performed live on 2nd November 2001 in Trondheim, Norway on the first date of the 'beautifulgarbage' European club tour. The song was played regularly until its last performance in Mexico City in June 2002.
An acoustic version of the song has been performed by the band on a number of occasions, most notably at the band's secret show at the Edinburgh Liquid Rooms on April 4th, 2002.
"Breaking Up the Girl" has also been performed live on TV shows CD:UK, Pepsi Chart Show, Top Of The Pops (UK), and on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (US).

It's basically saying in a roundabout way that the world we're living in is harsh and you've got to live in the moment, live in the now and if there's something in your life that isn't good then get rid of them.
