"Breaking Free" is a song from the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. It also appears on the soundtrack of the same name. It is sung by Andrew Seeley (uncredited),[1] Zac Efron, and Vanessa Anne Hudgens. It was also released as a single on September 28, 2006.

The song was sang at the climax of the film when Troy and Gabriella were participating in the callbacks in front of the whole school (who were basically their friends). They tried singing the first time but Gabriella was too scared. Troy managed to keep her on stage by doing the same thing like they did when they first sang together: looking at him. They try again and make the entire audience jump out of their seats, literally. During the song, both of one of Troy and Gabriella's parents also watch them sing. When the song is over the entire school is cheering and Troy gives Gabriella kiss on the cheek.

They later are about to kiss later but they are interrupted by Chad. It is said by some of the actors that Troy and Gabriella will kiss in the next film and we'll learn even more about them since the first film.

[edit] Chart performance

"Breaking Free" wasn't expected to be released as single and therefore was not expected to chart, but did anyway to due to strong downloads upon release on the film High School Musical.

As a result, "Breaking Free" debuted at #86 on the Billboard Hot 100, due to strong downloads. Then in its second week, the song jumped from #86 to #4, making Billboard Hot 100 history for making the largest upward movement in a single week making a 82-position jump. The single's enormous surge was credited solely to a high increase in digital downloads, since the song was not receiving any airplay on radio (except on Radio Disney).

"Breaking Free", to date, is the highest peaking single from the soundtrack on both the Billboard Hot 100 and on the iTunes chart, reaching #1 on the chart and therefore is considered the most successful single from the soundtrack.

[edit] Music video

The music video for this song was a clip from the movie/musical High School Musical. It was not released to any video countdowns in the US, because it was the climax song of the movie and Disney did not want it to be released. Germany's music video channels took it into the normal music video rotation. However, the remix version's video will be released onto the High School Musical Remix Edition DVD.

[edit] Notes
