Breakfast with the Beatles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Breakfast with the Beatles is a popular programming segment format on FM radio in cities in the USA. Stations which feature, or have featured it include: WXRT in Chicago, WMGK in Philadelphia, WGRF in Buffalo, WMXJ in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, KLOS and KLSX in Los Angeles, and many others.

The origins of the format are not recorded. It is known that DJ Helen Leicht brought it to WIOQ in 1976.

The format is simple: the entire content of the program, typically 2 hours, is related to the Beatles. As the title suggests, the program is broadcast in the morning, but often in the 10 a.m. to noon slot.

Items include:

  • Beatles recordings
  • Solo recordings by former members of the Beatles
  • Cover versions of songs written or performed by the Beatles, or the former members thereof.
  • Music by close associates of the Beatles, such as Yoko Ono, and the children of members of the band.
  • News, features, interviews related to the Beatles, former members and associates.
  • Interviews with experts on Beatle history and trivia.

It is a testament to the cultural influence of the Beatles that radio stations have been able to sustain this format, sometimes running daily, over at least 30 years. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono have all called in to the Los Angeles-based KLSX program. [1] The station dropped Breakfast with the Beatles in favor of infomercials. The last broadcast in Los Angeles aired on September 3, 2006. [2] The show was picked up by 95.5 KLOS in November 2006.
