Breakfast roll

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The breakfast roll is generally considered a cheap and convenient version of a full breakfast. It can be purchased at a wide variety of petrol stations, local newsagents, supermarkets, and eateries throughout the UK and Ireland. They are especially popular on weekend mornings as a hangover cure.

A breakfast roll may typically consist of a bread roll containing 2 sausages, 2 rashers of bacon, 1 or 2 fried eggs, white and/or black pudding, butter, and ketchup. In some cases a hash brown can be added. Brown sauce can also be included. The roll itself is usually one of two varieties: a soft "submarine"-type roll, or a demi-bageutte. An "all-day breakfast" sandwich featuring some or all of the above ingredients in a traditional sandwich of sliced bread may be used instead.

The popularity of the breakfast roll (and novelty songs) in Ireland lead to the song Jumbo Breakfast Roll by Comedian Pat Shortt reached number one in the Irish music charts and remained there for six weeks.
