Oh my god, it's me!
Oh my god, it's me!

Hi, my name is Eric McGill and I am a Wikipedian.

[edit] Wikipedia

My first edit to Wikipedia was on October 4, 2003. I added information about parks and entertainment to Vista, California. I've been a fairly regular contributor since then; admittedly, I'm not as fervent as I once was, but I still edit with at least some regularity, and occasionally start new articles.

My interests run all over the place, but certain types of articles I always seem to work on are those regarding language, California, and San Diego County. I'm strongly interested in filmmaking and movies but I don't seem to edit that kind of article that much. In any case, I strive for a neutral point of view, although I do my best to purge articles of stupid wishy-washy crap like "considered by some".

I believe that the phrase "considered by some" and sections or headings that consist of miscellaneous "trivia" have no place in Wikipedia. I find the former to be irritatingly noncommittal and ultimately meaningless, and the latter to be totally unencyclopedic, disorganized, and unprofessional. A statement should either be definite or not be made at all, and most of the "trivia" in such sections can easily be incorporated into more appropriate parts of the article. (Also, regarding "trivia": long-winded, strained coincidences in the style of some of IMDb's trivia entries aren't really encyclopedic either.)

I believe in having a sensible approach to the encyclopedic value of any given article. I strongly believe that the idea of a "benevolent dictator" is contrary to the purposes and nature of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is not censored for the "protection" of minors.

I try to bring up possibly controversial changes on the article's talk page for discussion before putting them into place. I also try to do the same for article moves.

I think people are making way too big a deal about userboxes.

Also, it would be nice if you didn't make major (non-maintenance) edits to my user pages. Thanks.
