[edit] First Cruzeiro, 1942-1967
The first cruzeiro was issued from 1942 to 1967. It replaced the real at a rate of 1000 réis = 1 cruzeiro. Coins were initially issued in denominations between 1 centavo and 5 cruzeiros, with later denominations going up to 100 cruzeiros. The first banknotes were overprints on earlier milréis notes, with denominations between 5 and 500 cruzeiros. 1 cruzeiro notes were introduced in 1944, with later issues going up to 10,000 cruzeiros.
[edit] Second Cruzeiro (Cruzeiro Novo), 1967-1986
In 1967, Brazil introduced the cruzeiro novo ("new cruzeiro"), with one cruzeiro novo equal to one thousand "old" cruzeiros. The first coins were issued in denominations between 1 centavo and 1 cruzeiro. Later coins were issued in denominations up to 5,000 cruzeiros. The first issue of banknotes consisted of old notes revalued with a simple handstamp, ranging from "1 centavo" stamps on 10-cruzeiro notes up to "10 cruzeiros novos" on 10,000-cruzeiros notes. When purpose-made banknotes and coins denominated in cruzeiros were issued in 1970, the name novo was dropped. Banknotes up to 100,000 cruzeiros were eventually issued.
In 1986, Brazil switched to a new currency unit, the cruzado. One cruzado was worth 1000 (novo) cruzeiros.
[edit] Third Cruzeiro, 1990-1993
In 1990, Brazil switched back to using the name cruzeiro for its currency. The cruzeiro replaced the cruzado novo at par. Coins were initially issued in denominations from 1 up to 50 cruzeiros, with later coins going up to 1000 cruzeiros. The first banknotes were overprints on cruzado novo notes, in denomination between 50 and 500 cruzeiros. Later notes were issued in denominations up to 500,000 cruzeiros.
The third cruzeiro was used until 1993, when it was replaced by the cruzeiro real. One cruzeiro real was equal to 1000 cruzeiros.
