Brazilian cruzado

Two different currencies called the cruzado (Cz$) were the monetary unit of Brazil from 1986 to 1990.

The cruzado replaced the second cruzeiro (at first called the "cruzeiro novo") in 1986, at a rate of 1 cruzado = 1000 cruzeiros (novos). It was divided into 100 centavos. Coins were issued in denominations of 1 centavo up to 10 cruzeiros. The first banknotes were overprints on cruzeiro notes, in denominations of10, 50 and 100 cruzeiros. Later notes were issued in denominations up to 10,000 cruzeiros.

[edit] Cruzado Novo, 1989-1990

In 1989, the cruzado was replaced by the cruzado novo, with 1000 old cruzados set equal to one cruzado novo. The cruzado novo was subdivided into 100 centavos. Coins were issued in denominations between 1 and 50 centavos. The first banknotes were overprints on cruzado notes, in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 cruzados novos. Regular notes were issued in denominations between 50 and 500 cruzados novos. In 1990, the cruzado novo was renamed the cruzeiro. Cruzado novo banknotes were overprinted with the new name of the currency.
