"What is Brat Fest all about? First of all it about good food at great prices. After that it is about being part of our community, its about giving back our community, its about celebrating being in/from Wisconsin, its about standing up for the community, its about you and its about me, Brat Fest is about us" - bratfest.com [1]
The "World's Largest Brat Fest" is held in Madison, Wisconsin annually on Memorial Day weekend at the Alliant Energy Center's Willow Island. Bratwurst, hotdogs, soft drinks, and Boca brats are served for $1.00 each, as they have been since the festival's inception in 1983 to raise money for local charities. Local celebrities (including Gov. James Doyle in 2006) volunteer their time as servers during the event. Many other non-profit groups will donate grillers and servers as a way to benefit the community
189,432 brats were consumed during the 2004 festivities, which is believed to be a world record for single festival over a 4-day period.
In 2005, Brat Fest was relocated from Hilldale Mall to the Alliant Energy Center and now coincides with the finish and festivities centered around the Mad City Marathon.
In 2006, two critically acclaimed filmmakers, Benjamin Lamb and Vernon Johnson, were brought in to create a film honoring the "Brat Fest." It was released on July, 15, 2006 to rave reviews. The film contained interviews from: Gov. James Doyle, Tim Metcalfe, Kevin Metcalfe, and the wife of Tom Metcalfe.
