Branxton, New South Wales
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Branxton is a town in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. It is mostly in Cessnock City Council, but part of it is in Singleton Shire. Together with nearby Greta, it had a population of 3,805 in 2001.
The Branxton area was settled in the 1820s and was named after Branxton, England.
Branxton is located on the New England Highway between Maitland and Singleton. It is 171 kilometres north of Sydney. It is close to major grape-growing areas.
There is a proposal to create a town of 50,000 people near Branxton, though the chances of this occurring seem distant. The location would be near the future F3 Link Road.
The town has an infamous welcome sign on approach by the local Lions Club stating that Branxton has 'two cemeteries and no hospital'. The sign is meant to be a deterrent to rule-breaking motorists.
