Branford High School is a 9-12 comprehensive public high school with an enrollment of 1,200 students according to the most recent Strategic School Profile. A primary task of Branford High School over the past few years has been the development of Performance-based Graduation Requirements, a plan that was based on current educational research, but much of the school's effort has been focused on promoting its new curriculum within the community. Parents have been very receptive, noting many positive changes in their children. In May 2003, the Board of Education approved a Performance-based Graduation Requirement (PGR) effective for the 2003-04 school year. Starting with the class of 2006, all graduates must meet minimum requirements in 12 different skill standards, including writing, reading non-fiction, problem solving, using technology, and communicating concepts in mathematics. Students are also encouraged to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities. Notable alumni include Brittney Carfora, a Columbia University basketball player. Currently, Brittney is the leading three point shooter in the NCAA with an outstanding 51.9%.
