Brampton Hut
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brampton Hut is the name of the junction between the A1 and A14 just outside Brampton, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England. The junction was originally a cross-roads on the Great North Road and Thrapston Road, and later a roundabout following the construction of the A1 and A604 roads.
The junction was named after the Brampton Hut hotel, which was so called as it looked like a wooden hut on stilts. Alongside the hotel was a BP filling station, originally known as the Brampton Hut Hotel Filling Station.
Around the time of the upgrade to the junction in the 1990s, when the A1 was segregated from the junction by means of a flyover and the A604 became the A14 road, the site was redeveloped. It now houses a large BP Connect filling station and truck park, a family restaurant and Travel Inn, and a McDonalds drive-thru.
The roundabout has recently had traffic lights installed (December 2006), however these have come under some criticism from regular visitors to the services as there are no lights exiting the services. Instead you must time your exit between the red phases of the lights for traffic entering from the A1 Road northbound and A14 road Westbound.
