Boyko Borisov

Boyko Metodiev Borisov (Bulgarian: Бойко Методиев Борисов) (born June 13, 1959) is the current mayor of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. He has been holding the post since November 8, 2005.

Borisov was born in Bankya. Between 1982 and 1990, he assumed different positions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but quit in 1990 to found the private security company Ipon-1 that guarded personalities like Todor Zhivkov and Simeon II. Borisov has been actively engaged in karate since 1980, serving as the coach of the Bulgarian national team and a referee of international matches.

Boyko Borisov was the Secretary of the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs with the previous government, between 2001 and 2005. He has also held several high-level positions in law enforcement agencies ingluding General of the Internal Police Force.

In the last parliamentary elections in the autumn of 2005, he was elected for parliament from two regions but declined the positions and instead became the mayor of Sofia at the place of Stefan Sofiyanski, who chose to become MP. He ran for parliament with Simeon II, the former prime minister of Bulgaria.

He is currently also working on founding a new political party, GERB (in English Coat of Arms, while also being an acronym).
