Boy Overboard is a juvenile fiction title by Morris Gleitzman. It deals with the notion of refugees leaving their home country in search of refuge.

[edit] Theatre Production
In 2005, the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) performed a theatrical adaptation of Gleitzman's novel. Appropriated to stage by Patricia Cornelius, Boy Overboard was performed at Riverside Theatres from 19-30 July.

In March 2006, ATYP took Boy Overboard to South Australia, where it was a part of the 2006 Adelaide Fringe Festival. The successful two week South Australian tour also visited Port Lincoln.

Jamal
Jamal is the protagonist. He is optimistic and always believes in people, often mentioning the "secret of soccer"-never giving up.
Bibi
Bibi is Jamal's sister. Aggressive and headstrong, she is very opposite to Jamal, yet they both show a strong sense of care and a sense of justice and honesty.
Jamal's Parents
Jamal's parents, the stern and sensible father and the caring and just mother, ran a bakery and a school. The Afghanistan government depicted in the book does not allow schooling, and when Jamal's mother is found, they must flee.
Omar
Omar is a small boy, who enjoys soccer just as much as Jamal and Bibi. He boarded the ship by hanging with a large family, and everyone thought that he was with them.
Rashida
Rashida is another one of the friends Jamal And Bibi meet onboard the ship, and saves the lives of the ship crew and passengers by giving Jamal flour to make bread.
[edit] Sequel
There is a sequel to Boy Overboard, entitled Girl Underground. It is about a young girl who tries to free Jamal and Bibi from a camp.
