Boxing Mania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boxing Mania is an arcade game made by Konami in 2001.

[edit] Overview

Modeled after the Japanese manga/anime "Ashita no Joe", or "Legend of Success Joe", Boxing Mania is a boxing simulator. It consists of four punch pads (very similar to, but smaller than the punch pads in Punch Mania/Fighting Mania, the fighting game modeled after Fist of the North Star), a head-shaped target, two pressure sensors, and infrared sensors similar to those in Police 911, another Konami arcade game. The object of the game is to punch the pads that come out and light up, while dodging the attacks of your opponent by moving in the direction indicated on the screen. This game is somewhat rare to find in arcades, especially since there is no English version.

[edit] Gameplay

Every opponent can be knocked out in a special way, whether it be a well-timed uppercut to the head or a series of blows to the punch pads in a short amount of time. If you are knocked down, you can get back up by continuously hitting the pressure sensors. The more you hit, the more health you have when you get back up.

The trick is to have stamina and speed; the mistake most people make when they first play this game is to hit the pads as hard as possible. This serves no purpose but to make you tired faster. Hit the pad once it comes out and light comes on; too early or too late counts as a "bad" or "miss", and takes away from your health. The machine will give cues for when you need to dodge, and in which direction. You can either dodge right, left, or you can duck. A small head icon will appear when you can strike the head. When the icon is not there, punching the head will have no effect. After doing enough damage to your opponent and filling up your momentum bar, a cutscene will happen and you can usually finish off your opponent somehow. However, since this game was only released in Japan, it involves a lot of guesswork before you can figure out what exactly you are supposed to do (unless of course, you can read Japanese).
