Bowyer-Smyth Baronets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Smith Baronetcy, of Hill Hall in the County of Essex, was created in the Baronetage of England on 28 November 1661 for the advocate Thomas Smith. His son, the 2nd Baronet changed his surname to Smyth. The 3rd Baronet died in 1774 and was succeeded by his three sons after each other. Between 1779 and 1799, the 7th Baronet changed the family's surname again, this time to Smijth. His two sons, the 8th and the 9th Baronet, died both childless and the baronetcy changed to their youngest brother. The 10th Baronet, Chaplain to King George IV, assumed by Royal License the additional surname of Bowyer in 1839. He was succeeded by his son a Member of Parliament (MP) for South Essex. After his son, the 12th Baront had died childless, the baronetcy went to a grandson of the 10th Baronet, since all other sons of the 11th Baronet were born illegitimately according to British law. In 1916, the 13th Baronet changed his surname to Bowyer-Smyth. He was succeeded by his nephew, an Aide-de-Camp to King George VI. As of 2007, the baronetcy is held by his son, the 15th Baronet.
