Bowie Tupou
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bowie Tupou is a Heavyweight Boxer from Tonga who is based in Australia and as of 2006 undefeated in 9 bouts.
He was born on August 3rd 1982 in Tonga, but grew up in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia and fights out of Sydney, Australia.
Stylisticly, Tupou is very much in the mould of the last Antipodean to feature on the global scene, Samoan David Tua, in that he is a short, stocky power puncher who may not be the flashiest fighter around, but he gets the job done. The difference is that Tua was an Olympic bronze medallist while Tupou just had one amateur bout (KO win) and immediately turned pro. Tupou however, is even bigger, weighing in at a trim 260lbs.
His appearance, dedication (Tupou is a Mormon who neither smokes nor drinks) and raw strength have convinced Johnny Lewis , by far the most well-known Australian coach (trained Jeff Fenech, Jeff Harding, Virgil Hill and Kostya Tszyu ) to train him.
Tupou made his debut on February 18th 2006 in South Windsor, New South Wales, Australia, against a fighter who had only had one professional fight at that time (he drew that fight), Brian Fitzgerald. After 6 very close and competitive rounds, Tupou collected a majority decision verdict. As the rematch also ended with a decision Fitzgerald is the only fighter to go the distance with Tupou. He picked up the lightly-regarded New South Wales title in his third fight but the interest he has created so far stems largely from his KO wins.
In 2007 he will make his US debut.
