The Bowen Basin contains the largest coal reserve in Australia. It covers an area of over 60,000 square kilometres in Central Queensland running from Collinsville to Theodore. The Bowen Basin has 34 operational coal mines that can extract over 100 million tonnes annually, 83% of Queensland's coal production.

The Bowen Basin contains much of the known Permian coal resources in Queensland including virtually all of the known mineable prime coking coal.
