The jackalope

Boundin' is a 2003 Oscar-nominated short film, shown at the start of the Disney-Pixar film The Incredibles. It features a desert-dwelling sheep whose elegant dancing is very popular with the other animals. One day the sheep-shearers arrive and shear it for wool. Having lost his coat, the sheep becomes shy and loses the confidence to dance so elegantly. It is whilst in his bare state that a jackalope comes across the little lamb and teaches him the merits of "bounding" rather than dancing (that is, getting up whenever you fall down). The sheep is converted and its popularity is restored.

Writer-director Bud Luckey designed and voiced all the characters, composed the music and wrote the story. According to the director's commentary for The Incredibles, Brad Bird wanted to introduce the animated short by having Rick Dicker, (the superhero relocator from The Incredibles, also voiced by Bud Luckey) enter a room, sit down, and pull out his banjo.

Boundin' was released on the The Incredibles 2-disc DVD collector's release on the second disc, including commentary from Bud Luckey and the short clip titled Who is Bud Luckey?.

This is the first Pixar short with a theatrical release that included vocal performances.

[edit] Plot

There is a sheep in the desert who likes to tap dance each day for his neighbors, including a rattlesnake, prairie dogs, an owl, and some fish. One day, some sheep shearers take him away and take his wool away, letting him go back after completely sheared. He feels embarassed, because his friends were now laughing at him. The next day, a jackalope appears and asks him about his troubles, eventually helping him out. From then on, the sheep doesn't care if he was laughed at; he just kept on dancing.

[edit] Trivia

Like many Pixar films, Boundin' contains a number of elements from other films. The following are mentioned in the commentary track on the Incredibles DVD:

  • The Ford Model T that carries the sheep shearers is a model for the 2006 film, Cars.
  • The hand of the sheep shearer is that of the dentist (P. Sherman) from Finding Nemo.
  • The fish in the pond are also models used in Finding Nemo, from the character Gurgle.
  • There is a hidden Easter Egg on the DVD of the movie Cars. On the main menu, after the third image of the Piston Cup flashes in front of Lightning McQueen, a Dinoco 400 logo will appear in the bottom right hand corner. Hit the "right" button on your remote to select it, and you will be shown a short film featuring Lightning, Mater and Guido that parodies this short film.
