[edit] Early years
This road was built in the late 1990's to serve as a by-pass of the Aylmer sector as well as a quicker route for Quebec route 148 which is the number assigned for this route. While it contains at-grade intersections, it may be upgraded to Quebec Autoroute 50. The western end of the road is at the intersection of the former section of Highway 148 (Chemin Eardley).
[edit] Extension project
This road will be extended east of its current end point (Boulevard Saint-Raymond) and connect with the newly extended portion of Boulevard Saint-Laurent. Residents in the Aylmer sector as well as those in the growing Plateau de la Capitale and Manoir des Trembles neighborhoods of the Hull sector can use this route as a more direct route to the downtown sections of Hull and Ottawa. The new boulevard is slated to open in the fall of 2007 after decades of debate on whether this project would be completed (bulldozing in the area near Boulevard Saint-Joseph) was done many years ago. It will pass through Gatineau Park despite concerns from environmentalists. However, measures have been implemented to reduce the impact on the environment.
Interchanges will be built for access to the Gatineau Park and Lac des Fees Parkway as well as for Boulevard Saint-Raymond. The initial construction of Boulevard Saint-Raymond allows for this new road to be connected with ease. A possible roundabout or an at-grade intersection will be included if the north and south sections of Boulevard Des Grives (a two-section road that serves both Manoir des Trembles and Plateau de la Capitale) are connceted therefore linking with the new Bouolevard. The city of Gatineau administration has confirmed that Boulevard des Grives will be connected to the new Boulevard from the north (Plateau de la Capitale shopping and residential area).
When this road opens, it will ease congestion on both Boulevard Saint-Raymond and Boulevard Alexandre-Tache, but it is unclear if STO transit buses will use this future four-lane road for faster transit trips.
[edit] Road name
It is also known by journalists and local residents as Axe McConnell-Laramee which are the two arterials that are located alongside each end. However, the city of Gatineau confirmed that the name of the road will change. Philemon Wright and Joe Montferrand were among the possibilities as well as Asticou, Aime-Guertin and des Allumettieres. [1] The name of Bobino in reference to former local comedian Guy Sanche was also suggested by many residences and a petition was in circulation in order to influence the City to consider the name Bobino which was not selection by the Urban Committee.
On February 27, 2007, the Urban Committee and City Council chose the name des Allumettieres for the full segment between Eardley Road and the Alexandra Bridge which will also replaced the name Boulevard Saint-Laurent in the easternmost segment. Homes and businesses located along St-Laurent will have a new address when the new road will be open to motorists during the fall of 2007
