"Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!" is an episode of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Plot

Asuka joins Shinji’s class at school…and moves in with Misato and him in their apartment. As Asuka adjusts to Japan (or perhaps everyone else adapts to her), a new Angel attacks which is capable of splitting itself into two identical copies. Using its dual copies the Angel is able to defeat Eva 01 and Eva 02, and dropping an N² Bomb on it only leaves it stunned for several days. In the meantime, Asuka and Shinji have to learn to work together and carry out a coordinated attack against the Angel through synchronizing their combat moves perfectly, which they achieve by using a classical music track.

[edit] Notes

  • This episode takes place soon after the previous one, "ASUKA STRIKES!", and in effect forms the second half of the two-part introduction-of-Asuka story.
  • First time that Eva Unit 01 and Unit 02 are deployed at the same time.
  • At the end of the episode, Shinji flinches when the holographic image of Asuka tries to slap him. This awkward dynamic could be explained in theorizing that Shinji merely flinched reflexively.
  • The normally unmovable Asuka cries in her sleep and mumbles about her mother. This will be expanded upon later in the series, and the scene is reused in the film, Evangelion: Death and Rebirth.
  • Upon further analysis, the viewer can see that Asuka is the one missing the beats in the synchronization game, not Shinji.
  • Kaji seems to flirt with Ritsuko in this episode; some have taken this to mean that they used to have a relationship. However, nothing revealed during the rest of the series ever implies that Kaji was seriously flirting with Ritsuko, and it seems that Kaji is merely "fooling around", quite possibly to arouse jealousy out of Misato.
  • This episode was the first to receive a "TV-14" rating during the series' run on Adult Swim, most likely due to sexual content.
