[edit] Recent edits to cats
Would you mind explaining your recent edits to pages like Tommy McAvoy and Ian McDiarmid. At first I thought it was vandalism, but on second thought it looks like you had a purpose in mind. However I can't work out what it was. AlistairMcMillan 21:14, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I'm also curious why you're changing the capitaliations in the categories for names like McWilliams and MacCarthy. What are we missing? Thanks --BaronLarf 23:16, Jan 7, 2005 (UTC) Yes, I'm also curious why you're changing the capitaliations in the categories for names like McWilliams and MacCarthy. What are we missing? - Simple really. In wikiworld (and a lot of others) McWilliams is not the same as Mcwilliams alphabetically. Bornintheguz 23:20, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

- And yet the capitalization stays the same in the categories. Interesting. Thanks for the insight.--BaronLarf 23:28, Jan 7, 2005 (UTC)

- Yes, that is it--it is by no means a universal practice (sorting McNames as if they were MacNames) and it is certainly not what I expect when looking through a directory. This has come up before (see User:SimonMayer/Mac-Mc) and as I recall there was no consensus about it then. I do not think it is a good idea to systematically make such changes without some consensus about it. older≠wiser 19:44, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] amending categories
Hey, I saw that you edited the Martyn Bennett article. What does the change you made do? Thanks --Paraphelion 03:52, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I have the same question about Victor A. McKusick. You actually changed the spelling of his last name to an incorrect form (Mackusick is not accurate). I'd like to understand what you were trying to... JFW | T@lk 19:53, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] cats again
Any particular reason for adding Category:English Civil War to Royalist? It's basically a disambiguation page. The relevant article for the English Civil War is Cavaliers (which, I'm afraid, is barely more than a stub). -- Jmabel | Talk 06:55, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] more cats (meeow!)
I notice you've recently been adding clubs like Glentoran and Aberdeen to [[Category:United Soccer Association teams]] - I must admit I have never heard of this organisation, and I wonder if something is wrong, since that category is itself included in [[Category:United States soccer clubs]], so obviously something is amiss somewhere! -- Arwel 01:10, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sheffield United F.C
If Sheffield United weren't the first team to be known as "United", who was? I've often heard that Sheffield were the first United and would love to know why I am wrong! Warofdreams 18:15, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
- see User talk:Warofdreams#Sheffield United F.C Bornintheguz 18:33, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
- Interesting, and the SUFC article should make this clear, but the claim refers to Sheffield United Cricket Club, its predecessor, who took their name in 1854 (and therefore it is the first sports club to be known as "United", not the first football team) - although earlier examples are very welcome! [edit] Moves of cricket pages
Why have you moved the Cardiff UCCE and Bradford/Leeds UCCE pages? Have you seen something about them being renamed? If so, what? And also if so, that wouldn't change the names they played under in old games. Finally - can we have solidi in page titles, I thought they mucked something up, which is why I went for Bradford&Leeds in the title. Kind regards, jguk 11:21, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] lots of edits, not an admin
Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 23:30, Jun 11, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] M. J. K. Smith
I've changed the category entry back to "M. J. K. Smith" simply because I can't think of anyone who'd look under "Michael John Knight" for this player. Loganberry (Talk) 18:31, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] FC United of Manchester
Hi,
I'm not fussed about whether "in similar circumstances" stays in the article or not, but I'm puzzled by your comment that the circumstances were "hardly similar." I realise that Glazer hasn't moved the club (yet?) but as both clubs were formed by disgruntled supporters after a twat took over their club, the circumstances seem fairly similar to me. Just wondering why you think otherwise. CTOAGN 8 July 2005 20:52 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject Football
I noticed you've made a lot of edits to football articles and wondered if you'd like to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Football. It's still new and there isn't a lot happening yet, but we're hoping to get things like a football collaboration of the (week/fortnight/whatever) going soon.

[edit] Plymouth
Greetings. Are you aware that it seems Wikipedia is being hoaxed in the Plymouth article at least concerning the putative existence and contributions of one "Lee Brook?" While it may be fodder for BJAODN, it really isn't appropriate for an encyclopaedia. Your attention to this matter will be appreciated. Regards, Fire Star 14:54, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Soccer matches by season
If this is a genuine project you're interested in, such as your articles on Plymouth (Argyle) F.C.'s results by season, and so long as we can have backing from others, I wouldn't mind joining you in collecting all of these results together. Looks like one heck of a project, what do you think?
I'll try and get something up on my Sandbox in due course to see if what we have in mind is more or less the same thing..
Otherwise, for completionists like ourselves, it looks like something could get going here..! Bobo192|Edits

Bornintheguz said: I just did the first season as I thought it would be interesting. I'm not up for doing more apart from the odd season here or there.
- Cool. In actual fact, I think I had overestimated my sources at hand. I don't know how many seasons I would actually be able to do - a lot of them I just have FA Cup seasons or similar..
- Sorry about that. Thought before I wrote, I guess. Just depends what else you think needs doing. Thank you. Bobo192|Edits

[edit] Category Edits
Why are you removing the category link to "English football clubs" from club pages? It is entirely relevant for club pages to link there. - Pal 22:42, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- see User talk:Pal#Category Edits Bornintheguz 22:52, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- For the same reason I wouldn't put Tommy Tynan in Category:English footballers and Category:English football Bornintheguz 22:50, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- Which is why you wouldn't put Chelsea F.C. in Category:English_football_clubs and Category:Football (soccer) clubs. But why shouldn't an English football club link to a category specifically made for English football clubs? - Pal 23:04, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- see User talk:Pal#Category Edits Bornintheguz 23:29, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- Which is why I wouldn't put Burnley F.C. in Category:Burnley F.C. and Category:English football clubs Bornintheguz 23:28, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- Check out the example on the convention page: Wikipedia:Categorization#When_to_use_categories. Notice that the suggested category for Michael Jackson is not Category:Michael Jackson, but rather Category:Pop singers. It's fine that there's a Category:Burnley F.C. page, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a link to Category:English football clubs on the main Burnley F.C. page. A user should not have to click on the Burnley cat. in order to get to a link to the English football clubs cat. - Pal 23:53, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use images
Could you please provide a full justification for fair use for the images you have uploaded (e.g. Image:Stanley Matthews.jpg, Image:Tom Finney.jpg, Image:Dixie Dean.jpg, etc.)? At the moment it is not entirely obvious which fair use category they fall under. Could you please follow the guidelines on providing justification and use an appropriately specific tag for your images so that the rationale is clear? Thank you. Qwghlm 20:13, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
As I am not sure whether they fall under fair use I have tagged the following images with {{fairusereview}} so their status can be reviewed by another WP editor:
- Image:TedDrake.jpg
- Image:HerbertChapman.jpg
- Image:HughieGallacher.jpg
- Image:DixieDean.jpg
- Image:TomFinney.jpg
- Image:StanleyMatthews.jpg
- Image:Hand of God goal.jpg
I have not tagged the remaining three images you have uploaded, as I suspect they were originally taken before 1923 and are thus in the public domain:
- Image:Steve Bloomer.jpg
- Image:Tip Foster.jpg
- Image:Alf Common.jpg
Even though they are scanned from a copyrighted work, as long as they have not been altered in any way they remain in the public domain - see Wikipedia talk:Copyright FAQ. However, I do not know the exact date those photos were taken, so I'll leave it to you to check the acknowledgements and re-tag those images accordingly. Please do include a full date and source in the justification for the PD tag. Thanks. Qwghlm 19:28, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Leônidas da Silva.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Leônidas da Silva.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Abu Badali 15:09, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Terry Butcher.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Terry Butcher.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Quentin X 13:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:PNE The Invincibles.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:PNE The Invincibles.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Littletinidol.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Littletinidol.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECU≈talk 14:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
