Born To Fly is a country music album by Sara Evans, released October 10, 2000. It was a major hit, eventually going Double Platinum. The album itself took some creative risks and Evans always credited this album as her "make it or break it" album. The lead single "Born To Fly" reached number one on January 19, 2001. The album was one of the most successful albums of the year. Evans was nominated for seven CMA awards: Album, song, single, music video, and female vocalist of the year. She won her first CMA award for music video of the year, "Born To Fly".

[edit] Making of the Album

Her previous album No Place That Far had produced her first number one single. But the other two singles from that album charted quite low. It was evident that "Born to Fly" would be a deciding factor in her career. Sara first sat down with songwriters Marcus Hummon and Darrel Scott and together they wrote the title track, "Born To Fly", basing it on Sara's life. Sara then wrote "I Keep Looking" with songwriters Tom Shapiro and Tony Martin (with whom she also wrote "No Place That Far"). Sara then stated she knew "something magical was happening." She eventually heard the song "I Could Not Ask For More" written by Diane Warren and recorded it knowing it had a big potential to become a hit. However, her favorite song on the album is "Saints and Angels", written by Victoria Banks.

[edit] Reception

The reception of Born To Fly was unexpected. It received outstanding reviews, and many critics believe the album to be her best. One reviewer stated "The third time is a charm for Evans... either way you look at it, Born to Fly is a great album." Evans not only showed people her amazing voice; she impressed people as a producer as well. The album spun off many hits including "Born To Fly" (#1), "I Could Not Ask For More" (#2), "Saints and Angels" (#16), and "I Keep Looking" (#5). The album has been certified double platinum. "Born To Fly" is considered to be Evans' signature song, and many of the songs can still be heard on the radio today, indicating the album's massive staying power. The joyous cover version of Bruce Hornsby and the Range's Every Little Kiss received a positive reception from Hornsby himself. The album led Sara to receive seven CMA nominations, and she won her first (and only) CMA award when "Born To Fly" won video of the year. Though "Born To Fly" has a traditional country feel, the three other singles had a much more pop sound to them which led many critics to believe that she might venture into pop. Her next album, Restless (2003) did in fact take a more pop direction and it was not until Real Fine Place (2005) that she would make an album with a traditional country sound.
