[edit] Plot synopsis
Sam's been missing for a week and Dean is looking frantically for him. When he finally finds Sam, his younger brother is sitting forlornly in a dingy motel room, covered in blood, with no memory of what happened and how he got there. They begin investigating and discover that Sam had stolen a beat up VW beetle with a bloody hunting knife in the back seat, and that he robbed a pack of menthol cigarettes and a bottle of malt liquor from a gas station. Dean and Sam find themselves at the house of a demon hunter named Steve Wandell, whose throat had been cut. From CC camera footage, the brothers watch Sam assault and murder Wandell. Filled with remorse, Sam asks Dean to kill him and when Dean insists that he would rather die than do that, Sam tells his brother, "You'll live to regret this," before pistol whipping Dean unconscious.
Sam goes to Duluth, Minn, where Jo is working in a pub. He tells Jo that she should stop carrying a torch for Dean and that he likes her. Appalled by his aggressive tone, she orders him to leave which promptly earns her a knock on the head. After waking up the next afternoon, Dean tracks Sam down via mobile phone GPS locator and arrives to see Jo tied to a post and Sam ready to stab her. Before Dean's appearance, Sam tells Jo that it was John Winchester who killed Jo's father and not a demon, as Ellen had told her. With Dean's gun aimed at his head, Sam again begs Dean to kill him, saying that he could no longer control his homicidal rages. Instead of obliging him, Dean throws holy water on Sam, burning him and making him flee.
Dean chases the possessed Sam through a storehouse to a dock. During the pursuit, the demon tells Dean that since it failed to make Dean kill Sam, it is now going to start tracking down and killing demon hunters. The demon then surprises and shoots Dean, who falls into the water below. Some time later, Jo finds Dean, who has a bullet in his shoulder. Jo patches Dean up and, for her troubles, is forbidden to go with Dean as he leaves for South Dakota in search of the next nearest demon hunter and Sam.
The hunter in South Dakota happens to be Bobby who sees through the demon's bad acting and gives Sam a beer laced with holy water. Next, the demon is tied to a chair under a Devil's Trap, in a repeat of the treatment Meg got in Season 1. Dean has joined the party and Bobby starts the exorcism ritual. To the shock of the two humans, the demon gleefully starts chanting the Latin verses as well, showing absolutely no sign of being harmed. Bobby sees a mark on Sam's arm and realizes that the demon has locked itself inside Sam's body. Things take a turn for the worse, and both Bobby and Dean are hurled bodily across the room and the demon has freed itself. The demon starts beating Dean up, taunting Dean about his failure to help either John or Sam, and revealing that it is really Meg who is out for revenge after spending a Dean-imposed stint in Hell. The beating escalates until Bobby steps in and quickly burns the binding mark on Sam's arm, causing the Meg demon to make another noisy black smoky exit, this time through the fireplace.
Sobered by the thought that other demon hunters could be after them for the slaying of Steve Wandell, the brothers hit the road. The episode ends on a light note, with Dean drawing Sam out of his destiny sized gloom by teasing him about having spent the week with a girl inside of him.

[edit] Production notes
- After Sam shoots Dean and Jo goes looking for him, she's calling him on his cell phone and, even though he fell in the water, his cell phone still works quite well and the ringtone is loud and clear.
