[edit] Athletic Program

[edit] Football

The Booker High School varsity football team has had a successful run for 3 of the last 4 years, reaching the Class 3A State Semifinal game in 2003, the 2005 Class 3A State Finals game (Lost to St. Augustine Yellow Jackets 31-15), and the 2006 Class 3A Regional Semifinals game.

[edit] Basketball

Keeping with school tradition, the 2006 Boys Basketball were State Champions.

[edit] Baseball

Booker has historically had one of the poorest baseball programs in the area. Controversy has plagued the leadership and kept many able players from participating. Likewise, several good baseball players who would normally be Booker students have opted to attend other schools in the area with better and more experienced leadership in the baseball program.

[edit] Visual and Permorming Arts Program (VPA)

[edit] Art

The Booker High Art program is one of great success, and has even helped develop men and women who have later won prestigious awards including Bill Corso who won the Oscar for "Best Makeup" in 2005.

[edit] Dance

The Dance program has many talented dancers who consistently perform at events and shows all over the Sarasota/Bradenton area.

[edit] Music

The Music program contains such talented musicians and vocalists including an up-and-coming local band "The Cherry Hill Project". Recently the students who play wind instruments have been invited to represent America in a performance at Carnegie Hall in March, 2007.

[edit] Television and Film

Booker's TV/Film program is constantly overlooked, but is one of the most high quality high school television programs in the country. It inhertited a news station's equipment and stage, with which they produce a morning show everyday. The program is part of the V.P.A program and holds a bi-annual Film Showcase.

Zach Freeman, Producer/Director of film team HALF EMPTY, leads the department to new standards, and has won several film festivals across the state and continues to shed light on the art of student filmmaking.

[edit] Theatre

The Theatre department of Booker High is renowned in the state as one of the best. They annually take place in the Florida Theatre Conference and have a large demographic of very talented performers.

Many Students join this program just to gain popularity and to get out of acedemic courses. There are a handful of talented actors and actresses in this program, but the majority of teens enrolled don't have much talent or vision.

[edit] Academic Extras

Booker High School offers students amazing power over what they choose to learn, with several "Academies" within the school.

Law/Public Service offers students with interest in studying Law specialized training, including training in current legal issues and attending teen court.

Environmental Science Academy (ESA) offers students gifted in science a chance to study nature up close and personal.

Aside from these more popular choices, Booker also offers Small Learning Communities, which reach out to students who wish to take selected classes from each academy, but not devote themselves to it.
