Stuttgart faced 53 air raids during World War II. A well-known raid was on 6 September 1943. 338 American heavy bombers attacked the city but losses were heavy and results disappointing.

Stuttgart was totally flattened by the raid on April 22, 1945. The city was an important industrial centre, but most targets were non-military and purely cultural. The attacks leveled 60% of all buildings. Many historic buildings collapsed.

• 52.972 million cubic feet of rubble was formed.
• 1,198 women and girls were raped following the occupation of the city by the French.
