Bolton-on-Swale

Bolton on Swale is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. As the name suggests it is near the River Swale. Bolton Beck is a tributary of the Swale which passes underneath a small bridge at the north of the village. The village is situated on the B6271 Road between Scorton and Northallerton. The Coast to Coast Walk passes through the village and walkers are a common sight in the summer season.
The community of Bolton-on-Swale and the surrounding catchment area is served by Bolton On Swale Church of England Primary School, which has around 100 pupils. The village church is dedicated to St. Mary's - it serves the village and a number of other small villages, hamlets and farmsteads in the surrounding countryside.
The church is a grade II* Listed Building built on the site of previous Norman and Saxon structures. The present building was probably erected during the early 14th century. The church was enlarged and restored by G. Fowler Jones in 1859; some interesting sarcophagi were found during the restoration and they can now found on the interior wall by the door. In the vestry a curious stone roof exists which is apparently a portion of the original Saxon structure.
In the church graveyard is the tomb of Henry Jenkins who, it is claimed, lived to be 169 years old! The dates on the tomb are 1500-1670.
The star residents are cats Jazzy and Saffy and they live in Garthside.
The local MP is William Hague.
