Boghead is a small village in South Lanarkshire, west central Scotland. It is about 23 miles south-east of Glasgow and sits nearby to the Avon Water. Boghead is a residential area, with working residents commuting to nearby villages and large towns of Lesmahagow, Strathaven and Lanark. It is composed of houses built along Strathaven Road (the A726) and Lesmahagow Road. It originated around the early 19thC as a settlement based around the old Blackwood Estate, as the original inhabitants used to work there.
[edit] Bellscroft Reservoir
Situated 1KM behind Boghead is Bellscroft Reservoir which has been operated illegally by Doonin Plant since 2001 without the benefit of planning permission. The primary objective of this operation was the working and recycling of remnant materials on site, the excavation of mineral deposits from the reservoir floor, the importation and recycling of inert waste materials, and the exportation of worked materials.
After this had been done the site is said to be infilled with inert material to raise existing levels to create a final landform which will tie in with the adjacent land. The proposed end use of the site was planned as being a greyhound training facility, comprising an exercise and training area, a kenneling and parking area, and some woodland planting around the perimeter of the site. Recently, however, planning permission has been refused, so the end land use is currently unknown.
Many problems have occurred with this site, however, as local Boghead residents have complained about several factors relating to Doonins illegal on-site operations and the lorries entering and leaving the site. The current access route from the site is Bellscroft Road, which leads onto the A726. As some lorries are unsheeted, extracted material from these lorries is known to fly out the lorries and lie on the road, becoming dangerous elements on the roads. Another problem is these lorries commuting the roads at "antisocial" hours. As these lorries are HGV's, it is understandable the noise which can be generated, especially to the awareness of those residents living on the beforementioned A726.
[edit] Bent Primary
Bent Primary is a primary school situated 1 mile east of Boghead on the A726. The school is mainly attended by children from Boghead and other close villages and is a Mixed school of Non Denominational religion. It is for pupils aged 5 years old through 11, and its Local Education Authority is South Lanarkshire.
[edit] Businesses in Boghead
From 1926 to the present day, there was a haulage company called "Richard Bell & Sons". This company transported cattle and other animals around Scotland, with its base being in Boghead. It was a family business through the years, until its sale in 2000 to one of its employees. The business is still running under the title "Richard Bell & Sons", however its owner is one Mr. John Adkin, of Brocketsbrae, Lesmahagow.
Owen Pilling Graphics Ltd, one of the UK's leading manufacturers in vehicle graphics and design, was set up and based adjoining the owner's house in Boghead. Owen and Janet Pilling have recently moved out of Boghead, and their business is now located in Lesmahagow's Milton Industrial Estate.
