Boca Ciega High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boca Ciega High School is a high school located in southern Pinellas County, Florida and is part of Pinellas County Schools. Boca Ciega High School is located in Gulfport, Florida but most of the students that attend live in or around St. Petersburg, Florida. Boca Ciega was built in 1955 in an open air style of campus. It is due to be replaced with a new state of the art school beginning in 2007. Former Principal John Leanes(you will be missed Mr. Leanes) began the plans towards a new school and current Principal Paula Gene-Nelson continues to push forward the new plans of a new school. Boca Ciega is commonly referred to as Bogie by the community and former students and staff. Bogie has one of the most active and largest high school alumni associations in the United States. The Bogie "lifestyle" of the early 1960s actually served as the creative model for "Porky's," the surprise hit movie of 1981. Reputedly, key characters in the movie were patterned after Bogie students Bert Randall, Al Mortimer, and Joe Kennedy, although they have repeatedly denied any such link.

Welcome to Boca Ciega High School – Home of the Pirates!

Boca Ciega High School is located in Gulfport, Florida and is part of the Pinellas County School System. Within our traditional school population, we offer a Center for Wellness and Medical Professions (CWMP). We also have embarked on a national recognized Pre-Engineering program, Project Lead the Way.

We are in a transition time because we are getting ready to embark on an exciting change on campus – a NEW SCHOOL! We are fortunate to be in a situation where our new school will be designed around the needs of students in today’s changing high schools. Our school will be designed to support Smaller Learning Communities with a focus on the Freshman Experience and Career Pathways that lead and support students in a career/technical certification that can be earned in addition to a high school diploma.

BCHS has partnered with the International Center and Dr. Willard Daggett in order to re-evaluate how we deliver instruction to high school students. With the support of the center and our district experts, we are embarking on many changes to assist our students in reaching their highest potential and to exit high school ready for post secondary education or the workforce.

The Freshman Experience (FX) began in 2005-06 and continues to provide the relationships that students need when transitioning from middle to high school. There are two teams, Blue and Gold, as well as a CWMP team. We continue the interdisciplinary teaming approach through the 10th grade with our 10X program that focuses on student success on the FCAT.

Starting in 2007-08 school year, 11th and 12th grade students will select a Career Pathway that will guide them towards post secondary education, whether that be college or technical education.

As Principal, I welcome you to take a look at our school! I’m sure you will find that Boca Ciega High School is truly a “Great Place to Be!”
