Bobby Hill

Robert Jeffrey "Bobby" Hill is a character on the animated series King of the Hill and is voiced by Pamela Segall. He is the 13-year old only child of Hank and Peggy Hill. Overweight, a late bloomer and lacking strength, Bobby is not suited for sports, nor is he useful with his hands (though he is a gifted marksman), making him a comic foil to his ex-high-school-football-playing, tool-savvy father. Different as night and day, they eventually form a relationship in spite of their differences. Bobby was once sent to Fort Berk, a military academy which his highly-decorated grandfather Cotton Hill attended as a young man. He is also friends with Joseph Gribble and next-door neighbor Connie Souphanousinphone. Innocently sensitive and good-hearted, Bobby wants more than anything to be a prop comic like his hero "Celery Head", but has also aspired to be a ladies' man, runway model, proctologist, comedian, shaman, and a salesman of propane and propane accessories; he may even be the reincarnated Buddhist Lama "Sanglug". In later seasons he served as the mascot for his middle school football team, the Tom Landry Longhorns. His father is occasionally embarrassed by Bobby's sometimes effeminate mannerisms, but Bobby most of all wants his father to be proud of him. Hank was deeply concerned for years by a suspicion that Bobby was gay. This fear was put to rest though when Connie's father caught her and Bobby together half-naked (prompting Kahn to tell Hank) and while Hank was obligated to yell at Bobby, he was also pleased by this development. Kahn has since written a song that mocks Bobby, entitled "Fat White Lump".

[edit] Trivia

  • He has kicked Hank in the groin once.
  • A trio of visiting Buddhist monks once considered Bobby to be a Tulku, a reincarnated lama named Sanglug. Given the end of the episode, it is debated whether or not he truly was a Tulku.
  • Bobby once ate a 72-ounce steak in 37 minutes after a breakup with his vegetarian girlfriend Marie (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar) for the sake of spiting her (courtesy of advice from his dad, Hank).
  • Once got in trouble for giving Troy Aikman a B+ rating at Cowboys training camp.
  • He became ill with gout after repeatedly consuming chicken liver sandwiches at a New York-style deli in the local mall; this deli has since converted to a sushi restaurant.
  • He once ran away with Connie in Branson, Missouri (they lacked the money to leave), after he met Yakov Smirnoff and sold him a joke for $20.
  • Despite his outward appearance and general lack of athletic skills, Bobby has played on several sports teams. In the series pilot, Bobby played on a Little League baseball team. He wrestled for Tom Landry Middle School, and played football with the Landry Cougars (Later called the Landry Longhorns) and briefly played goalie and other positions for Landry's soccer team, "The Wind". He later became the Landry Longhorn, the football team's mascot. He joined the Tom Landry Middle School track team in the season 9 episode "Bobby on Track". In this episode he was given the nickname "the Stick" because the track coach used him to motivate the other, more skilled players on the team.
  • Bobby is a fan of The Benny Hill Show.
  • While drunk, Peggy once said that she wanted to name Bobby "Jeffrey," but "some man" (presumably Hank) wouldn't let her.
  • Unknowingly made methamphetamine for a science project; was duped by Connie's cousin, Tid Pao (voiced by Lucy Liu).
  • Often in the background (usually on his shelf) a Bart Simpson doll can be seen.
  • A throwaway line in the first season episode King of the Ant Hill reveals that he knows Dale Gribble is not Joseph's father. When Joseph comments that a queen ant resembles the one "on my dad's truck" (a reference to the giant queen ant replica mounted to the hood of Dale's van), Bobby replies, "You mean Dale Gribble's truck?" indicating that Bobby does not automatically equate Dale with Joseph's father.
  • Bobby once imitated Eminem in an episode doing a hand shadow he said "Hi my name is what my name is who my name is Slim Shady"
  • Bobby owns a Nintendo 64, as he is seen using an N64 controller to play video games in several episodes.
  • Bobby collected Beanie Babies in 1998.
  • Bobby also has a GameBoy which he plays in some episodes.
  • Bobby pines for the affections of Kerri Strug as referenced in the episodes "I Remember Mono" and "Rodeo Days"
