The N62 is the latest V8 from BMW, built in Munich, Germany. It has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. The cylinders are lined with cast iron.

It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with BMW's double-VANOS and Valvetronic technologies and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods.

In the International Engine of the Year awards in 2002, the N62 won overall as well as claiming the "Best New Engine" and "Above 4-litre" categories.

The N62B36 is a 3.6 L (3600 cc) version producing 200 kW (272 hp) at 6200 rpm and 360 N·m (266 ft·lbf) of torque at 3700 rpm.

The N62B40 is a 4.0 L (4000 cc/244 in³) version producing 225 kW (306 hp) at 6300 rpm and 390 N·m (288 ft·lbf) at 3500 rpm.

The N62B44 is a 4.4 L (4398 cc) version. Bore is 92 mm and stroke is 82.7 mm. There are two versions, one producing 235 kW (319 hp) at 6100 rpm and 440 N·m (325 ft·lbf) at 3700 rpm and the other 245 kW (333 hp) at 6100 rpm and 450 N·m (332 ft·lbf) at 3600 rpm.

The N62B48 comes in two versions, both displacing 4.8 L (4799 cc/292 in³). The first is a 265 kW (360 hp)/500 N·m (369 ft·lbf) used in the BMW X5 4.8iSA, while a different tune is used for the 270 kW (367 hp)/490 N·m (361 ft·lbf) version.
