The BMW M57 is a straight-6 Diesel engine produced from 1998. It won the "2.5-3 L" category of the International Engine of the Year award for 1999 through 2002. The updated twin-turbocharger version won that same award in 2005.

The 2.5 L (2497 cc/152 in³) M57D25 was the smallest member of the family. It produced 120 kW (161 hp) at 4000 rpm and 350 N·m (258 ft·lbf) at 2000-2500 rpm with a 4750 rpm redline. It was introduced in 2000.

An updated 2.5 L (2497 cc/152 in³) engine, the M57TUD25, was introduced in 2004. It produced 130 kW (174 hp) at 4000 rpm and 400 N·m (295 ft·lbf) at 2000-2750 rpm.

The 2.9 L (2926 cc/178 in³) M57D30 was introduced in 1998. Two versions were originally produced, both at 135 kW (181 hp) at 4000 rpm but with either 390 N·m (288 ft·lbf) at 1750-3200 rpm or 410 N·m (302 ft·lbf) at 2000-3000 rpm. The power output was increased to 142 kW (190 hp) at 4000 rpm in 2000.

A high-performance M57TUD30 at 3.0 L (2993 cc/182 in³) was introduced in 2002. It originally produced 160 kW (215 hp) at 4000 rpm and 500 N·m (369 ft·lbf) at 2000-2750 rpm, but was tweaked for 150 kW (201 hp) at 4000 rpm and 410 N·m (302 ft·lbf) at 1500-3250 rpm for 2003 and again for 200 kW (272 hp) at 4000 rpm and 560 N·m (413 ft·lbf) at 2000-2250 rpm in 2004.

The 3.0 L (2993 cc/182 in³) M57TU2D30, introduced in 2005, produces 170 kW (228 hp) at 4000 rpm and 520 N·m (384 ft·lbf) at 2000-2750 rpm.
