The Bluenotes brand was established in 1984, and has developed into Canada's leading denim retailer. Bluenotes started as being a private label sold in Thrifty's, a clothing store chain owned by Dylex. When Dylex went bankrupt American Eagle Outfitters purchased the Bluenotes/Thrifty's chain in 2000 and attempted to resurrect the brand. With 107 stores located throughout Canada, Bluenotes proved to be a difficult challenge for the big American retailer, and after several years of losing money the division was sold to privately owned YM Inc. in 2004.
