Blue Jay (real name: Jay Abrams) is a DC Comics superhero and a former member of the Champions of Angor, also known as the Justifiers. He has the ability to shrink to seven inches tall and grow blue wings which allow him to fly. Blue Jay is an homage to the Marvel Comics character Yellowjacket. Blue Jay was created by Mike Friedrich and Dick Dillin. He first appeared in the pages of Justice League of America #87 (February 1971).

[edit] Fictional Character Biography

After surviving the destruction of his home world of Angor, he and his allies came to Earth, in an attempt to disarm its nuclear arsenal and save it from a similar fate. Blue Jay soon became a member of the Justice League for a while, and was even the leader of the European branch of the League.

The three primary members of the Champions of Angor to survive the trip to Earth were Blue Jay, Silver Sorceress (an homage to the Scarlet Witch), and Wandjina (an homage to Thor). The creation of these characters is a corrollary to Roy Thomas' characters within the Squadron Supreme (a Marvel homage to DC's Justice League of America at the time).

Later, another survivor of Angor, Mitch Wacky, would manage to make it to Earth. Blue Jay, along with all of Angor, had revered Mitch, calling him 'Uncle Mitch'. He was a Walt Disney-type man, who brought joy and happiness to the entire planet through a technologically advanced theme park and entertainment empire.

Blue Jay was frequently regarded during his tenure in the Justice League International as its weakest member, and was often treated as an inferior character who spent most of his time wracked with self-doubt. This included the Armageddon 2001 annual which saw him (in a possible time-line) flung into the future and turned down for membership to the Legion of Super Heroes because he was "just Shrinking Violet with wings". His inclusion as a member of the Legion of Substitute Heroes only became the newest version of a punchline that kept getting repeated ad nauseum.

Jay enjoyed training sessions that involved tempting Power Girl's mangy, one-eyed cat to pursue him.

For a time, Blue Jay was manipulated into leading the Justice League of Europe, something he had the skills to do. He resigned his position as soon as he was able.

Following the murders of Silver Sorceress and Mitch Wacky, Blue Jay became the sole survivor of Angor. Later, he was involved in power struggles involving the Rocket Reds and the villain known as Sonar.

[edit] Current status

In Action Comics #842, he was kidnapped by acquisitive aliens, along with several other metahumans (including Superman, Livewire, and Aquaman).
