Template talk:Bloodsports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I find this template problematic for a number of reasons:

  • 1. The phrase itself in non-historical usage is rhetorical, pejorative and against NPOV
  • 2. The graphic design of the template is visually disruptive and hard to read in the default blue-on-crimson
  • 3. The design seems unnecessarily intrusive
  • 4. With the existence of a category for blood sports, the template is redundant

Bloodsport is a defined term in the dictionary and is understood in the general public. SirIsaacBrock 22:43, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, and so are the terms "racist," "homophobic," "chauvinist" or "bourgeoisie" but these words would seem to violate NPOV as templates as well. I appreciate the more readable version, but still perceive the template as essentially rhetorical, political and against NPOV. Rorybowman 03:29, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hunting

Can someone clarify for me in what way hunting is a bloodsport? I mean this in all seriousness. See, I can understand how trophy hunting or sport hunting or something like that might be considered a bloodsport. But hunting is a more general term that also includes hunting for subsistence reasons. That doesn't even meet the definition of sport, so how can it be a bloodsport? There are many parts of the world where hunting is still very much part of a subsistence lifestyle. I truly, honestly, fail to see how this can be called a bloodsport.

Now, someone might want to say that that's not the kind of hunting that's refered to here. But, how is it excluded if it's not explicitly included? In my opinion, including hunting in here, without qualification, reveals a POV problem that may, in fact, be symptomatic of a larger, conceptual difficulty, with the template itself. At the very least, I propose deletion of the "hunting" entry and replacement of it by "trophy hunting" or "sport hunting" or, perhaps, both. Comments? — Dave 14:22, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
