It could be that the actual story is based on the proposed construction of a motorway through the South Shropshire area, something that has been proposed various times (to link the West Midlands conurbation with the Welsh tourist resorts). So far no motorway has been constructed through the area (though not because of anything the book or film portrays).

Does this mean that in the Tv series, it's set as well as filmed in Shropshire? --JBellis 11:39, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

No, but the story could have been written with South Shropshire in mind. Filming it there certainly was a good choice as it is very similar to the setting given by the book.

It's my understanding (and I need to do a little more research) that Tom Sharpe was at Lancing College (Sussex) during the war and the whole school was evacuated to Shropshire for safety (I think it was Moor Park near Ludlow - again, more research needed). My informant (who was a contemporary of Sharpe) recalls that Sharpe spent a lot of time off exploring the countryside around Ludlow and that Handyman Hall is definitely based on Downton Castle in Downton Gorge. --Bill Philips 12:35, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm confused by the reference to the series as a "film". Afaik the series was only ever shown as a 6-part serial in the UK. Is there a shorter TV Movie version? If so I don't see how they could possibly cram in all of the series' plot points into a couple of hours without massively confusing the audience. Lee M 17:51, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
