Bloomfield is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 19,587 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 67.8 km² (26.2 mi²). 67.4 km² (26.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.61%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 19,587 people, 7,902 households, and 5,152 families residing in the town. The population density was 290.8/km² (753.0/mi²). There were 8,195 housing units at an average density of 121.6/km² (315.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 40.00% White, 54.06% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.60% from other races, and 2.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.67% of the population.

There were 7,902 households out of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 15.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $53,812, and the median income for a family was $64,892. Males had a median income of $42,860 versus $36,778 for females. The per capita income for the town was $28,843. About 5.1% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.
