Bloodrock 3 is the third album by the Texan hard rock band Bloodrock, released on Capitol Records in 1971. Significantly better produced than either of the band's first two albums, it nonetheless features much the same heady mix of fast, exciting, Hendrix-inspired hard rock and long sombre tracks that in terms of anything else that was happening at the time can only be compared to the Doors at their moodiest. The outstanding development with this album was the maturation of singer Jim Rutledge's vocal style. On the band's first two albums, Rutledge often sounds raw and inexperienced. By contrast, the songs on this album are sung impeccably and his performances - which often remind one of Jim Morrison at his most raucous - easily entitle him to a place among the great rock singers of the early 70s. The opening track, Jessica, is probably the band's most infectious up-tempo track. Otherwise, it is the slower, more haunting tracks - Song for a Brother and Breach of Lease - that command attention this time around. Few listeners could remain unmoved by the depth of emotion Rutledge conveys in these tracks, as well as in the Soft Machine cover, the exquisite version of A Certain Kind.
