Blocker (ice hockey equipment)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A blocker is a form of protection for a goalie playing ice hockey. It is shaped like a rectangle, and is worn on the goalies' hand that holds the stick.

[edit] Overview

The blocker helps re-direct shots faced and usually saves shots that are high. The blocker also covers the hand and wrist to prevent injury. Like the goalie pads and glove, it shows the brand of the blocker, brands such as showing Itech, and RBK, with the design on it. The opposite hand wears the glove. However, the blocker's redirection can lead to rebounds. It is curved at the top and is also flat.

Back in the early days, the blocker was mainly brown with no design, and of course, was less protective than the modern ones.

The goalie can drop the stick, and hold the puck wih his/her hand. A notable NHL goalie who has done this many times is Dominik Hasek.
