[edit] Question

Raw signature (If unchecked, the contents of the box above will be treated as your nickname and link automatically to your user page. If checked, the contents should be source code, including all links. Do not use images, templates, or external links in your signature.)

Can I use a {{subst:User:Blastedt/~}} in my sig, or no?? Blastedt•(talkcontribs) 19:01, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Looking at WP:SIG#Transclusion of templates I'd say no templates are allowed, period. Hoof Hearted 20:18, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Although, the problems outlined there don't apply to SUBST:'s, since a subst:'d template just copy-pastes in essence, the code form one page to the other. I'm gonna reapply the helpme so i can get some others' opinions on this :/ BTW: I'm using a subst:'d template right now... Blastedt•(talkcontribs) 20:58, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
A better place to find help about signatures is Wikipedia talk:Signatures, so that's where I went to find more info on this issue. A search through the talk page archives yields several discussions about templates in signatures, and I think the best explanation is here. In short, using a template for a signature not only increases server load but is also too easy to vandalize, meaning that anyone could change every signature you've ever left anywhere on the wiki in the blink of an eye. I almost changed yours just a second ago to prove it, but my sanity quickly returned. :-)
Your code is fine – just put it into your user profile in your user preferences and check the 'raw signature' box. If you'd still like to pursue it, ask a question at Wikipedia talk:Signatures or at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) for more expert advice. Happy editing - KrakatoaKatie 21:56, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, thats what I'm saying. If you vandalized it (You can't now, I moved it to /~.css), a subst:d sig wouldnt change if the template did. Also, it puts on just as much load as a normal subst:'d template does. Thanks for replying :). Blastedt•(talkcontribs) 18:32, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
