[edit] Photograph Copyright

I have added a link to this picture to the page on Joy Liebert. The photo was clearly taken in 1934/35. The link says that the picture may be reproduced for research and study (which isn't enough for WP) unless permission is applied for and given. However, this link says that in Oz, copyright in piccis taken before 1 May 1969 only lasts for 50 years from when they are taken. This suggests the picci is already out of copyright in Oz. Does that mean I can add it to Wikicommons direct and add the picture to the article? jguk 18:19, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I think so. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-Australia (and its talk page). Stephen Turner (Talk) 19:51, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
The Wikipedia template PD-Australia:
Public domain
This image was created in Australia and is now in the public domain because its term of copyright has expired. According to the Australian Copyright Council (ACC), ACC Information Sheet G23 (Duration of copyright) (Sep 2005), generally copyright has expired as follows:
Australia
Type of material Copyright has expired if ...
 A  Photographs or other works published anonymously, under a pseudonym or the creator is unknown: taken or published prior to 1955-01-01
 B  Photographs (except A): taken prior to 1955-01-01
 C  Artistic works (except A & B): the creator died before 1955-01-01
 D  Published editions1 (except A & B): first published more than 25 years ago
 E  Commonwealth or State government owned2 photographs: first published more than 50 years ago
1means the typographical arrangement and layout of a published work. eg. newsprint.

2owned means where a government is the copyright owner as well as would have owned copyright but reached some other agreement with the creator.

explains it in a bit more detail. Basically, copyright has expired on any photo taken in Australia before 1955. The NLA's notice is out of date. — Moondyne 02:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Re the above, that is fascinating. Does the same rule apply to photos taken in GB before 1955? If so, I will start downloading some. --BlackJack | talk page 09:38, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

No, unfortunately not, only photos taken in Australia. Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:56, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Pity. What is the rule re British photos? Is there a cutoff date or are they all subject to copyright for evermore? --BlackJack | talk page 10:09, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
I have bookmarked this PDF — http://www.museumscopyright.org.uk/private.pdf — which (if accurate) suggests that it's 70 years after the death of the photographer, if the photographer is known, or else 70 years after first publication. So photos published before 1936 would be OK if the photographer is not known. Stephen Turner (Talk) 17:02, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
The real reference is the Copyright Act (as amended) and statutory instruments made under that Act (which in turn apply EU directives). I believe Stephen is right though - it's 70 years after the death of the photographer, if known - otherwise from 1 January following the date on which it was taken, if unknown (with this date changing to 70 years after the death of the photographer if you later learn who he was). jguk 18:32, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories for Delete/Merge/Rename

To list a category for deletion, merging or renaming, follow this process:

I.
Preliminary steps.

Determine whether the category needs deleting, merging, or renaming.

  1. If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories) before using this page. Nominate categories here that violate policies, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant, need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas.
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy when nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. In the following three special cases:
    1. If the category in question is a stub category, go to Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion.
    2. If the category is only populated by a template, go to Wikipedia:Templates for deletion. For a template with the same name use catfd.
    3. If the category is empty for more than four days, use db-catempty for a speedy deletion.
II.
Edit the category.

Add one of the following tags at the top of the category text.

If the category is a candidate for speedy renaming, use:
and follow the instructions at Speedy renaming.
If a single category:
If a group of similar categories, use an umbrella nomination:
  • For deletion,
  • For a merger,
  • For renaming,

Place the merger tag in the category that is being removed and write the name of the receiving category in "other category". "Cfd section name" is optional but use it because it is the name of the section on the deletion discussion page: use something like "Category X to Category Y"

  • Preview before saving. The display will give more precise instructions about the next step.
  • Please include "cfd" or similar in the edit summary, and don't mark the edit as minor.
  • See the talk pages at Cfd, Cfm, and Cfr for more specific information.
  • Consider adding Cfd section name to the main article's talk page or to categories that are merge targets to notify users that the category has been nominated for deletion or renaming. Doing so would not only extend an additional courtesy, but possibly also bring in editors who know more about the subject at hand. See the talk page at cfdnotice for more information on how to use this template.
III.
Create the Cfd subsection.

Click on THIS LINK to edit the section of CFD for today's entries.

Follow the instructions in the comments (visible during edit), to copy and paste the template shown. All categories are specified without the Category: prefix.

For cfd, use:

For cfm, use:

For cfr, use:

For umbrella nominations, the standard templates should build the "Cfd section name" for the 1st nomination, although the 2nd and subsequent nominations must be added manually, like this:
Cfd section name
  • 1st category
  • 2nd category
  • Your vote: Your reason for nominating the category ~~~~
  • Preview before saving to ensure all the fields have been properly listed.
  • Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.
  • Always add a colon (':') in the link to the category being listed, like :Category:Foo. This makes a category link that can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).

[edit] Notes for nominators

Once you have submitted a category here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is supported, helpful administrators and editors will log the result, and ensure that the change is populated to all affected pages.

Also, consider adding to your watchlist any categories you nominate. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not removed by a vandal.

[edit] Notes on discussions

Anonymous users may nominate and comment on proceedings. If they lack edit history, comments and votes from anonymous or new users may be discounted. See Wikipedia:Sock puppetry and Wikipedia:Suffrage for details.

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion Category:Categories for merging, or Category:Categories for renaming, but accidentally not be listed here. They will be re-listed on a new day as they are noticed.

[edit] Redirecting categories

It is our general policy to delete categories that do not have articles in them. Unlike articles, categories are mostly for internal use only. If they don't have any articles, they shouldn't have any links from any articles or any other categories, because they are not useful for navigation and classification.

However, some categories frequently have articles assigned to them accidentally, or are otherwise re-created over and over again. In these cases, we use a form of "soft" redirection.

Categories cannot be redirected using "hard" redirects (#REDIRECT target) due to limitations in the MediaWiki software. Instead, use target. Helpful bots patrol these categories and move articles into the redirect targets.

You can see a list of redirected categories in Category:Wikipedia category redirects.

[edit] How to list pages for deletion

This page describes how to list for deletion articles and their associated talk pages. See the related pages for templates, categories, redirects, stub types, pages in the Wikipedia namespace, user pages, or images and other media, or use copyright violation where applicable. As well, note that deletion may not be needed for problems such as pages written in foreign languages, duplicate pages, and other cases.

Note: Users must be logged in to complete steps II and III.

To list a single article for deletion for the first time, follow this three-step process:

I.
Put the deletion tag on the article.

  Insert the tag at the top of the page.

  • Please do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Please include in the edit summary the phrase
    nominated for deletion: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
  • You can check the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. This allows you to notice if the AfD tag is removed by a vandal.
  • Save the page.

(If the article has been nominated for deletion before, use instead of . See Template Talk:afdx. This does not include articles that have only had the prod tag removed.)

II.
Create the article's deletion discussion page.

  The resulting AfD box at the top of the article should contain a link to "Preloaded debate" in the AfD page.

  • Click that link to open the article's deletion discussion page. Some preloaded text and some instructions will appear.
  • Give a reason for the deletion and a category for the debate (instructions will be on the page).

OR

  • Click the link saying "this article's entry" to open the deletion-debate page.
  • Insert this text:
     ~~~~
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion, Category with a letter indicating the category of the debate, and Reason... with the reasons you think the page should be deleted.
  • Consider checking "Watch this page" to follow the progress of the debate.
  • Please use an edit summary such as
    Creating deletion discussion page for PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
  • Save the page.
III.
Notify users who monitor AfD discussion.
  • Copy the tag below, and then click  THIS LINK to open the deletion log page. At the bottom of the log page, insert:
replacing PageName appropriately.
  • Include the discussion page's name in your edit summary like
    Adding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
  • Save the page. Your insertion will be automatically expanded to the same form as the preceding lines in the file: .
(If you used template  instead of , use "PageName (2nd nomination)" instead of "PageName" for a second nomination, etc.).
To list multiple related pages for deletion see here.
WikiProject User scripts may have some scripts to streamline these steps.
Once listed, deletion discussions can, optionally, also be transcluded into an appropriate deletion sorting category, such as the ones for actors, music, academics, or for specific countries; which helps attract people familiar with a particular topic area. Please see the list of categories.
  • It is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the article that you are nominating the article. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the article and/or use TDS' Article Contribution Counter. For your convenience, you may use  (for creators who are totally new users),  (for creators), or  (for contributors or established users).
  • To avoid confusing newcomers, the reasons given for deletion should avoid Wikipedia-specific acronyms.
  • Place a notification on significant pages that link to your nomination, to enable those with related knowledge to participate in the debate.
  • If recommending that an article be speedily deleted, please give the criterion or criteria that it meets, such as "A7" or "non-notable biography".
