[edit] Photograph Copyright
I have added a link to this picture to the page on Joy Liebert. The photo was clearly taken in 1934/35. The link says that the picture may be reproduced for research and study (which isn't enough for WP) unless permission is applied for and given. However, this link says that in Oz, copyright in piccis taken before 1 May 1969 only lasts for 50 years from when they are taken. This suggests the picci is already out of copyright in Oz. Does that mean I can add it to Wikicommons direct and add the picture to the article? jguk 18:19, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think so. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-Australia (and its talk page). Stephen Turner (Talk) 19:51, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia template {{PD-Australia}}:
This image was created in Australia and is now in the public domain because its term of copyright has expired. According to the Australian Copyright Council (ACC), ACC Information Sheet G23 (Duration of copyright) (Sep 2005), generally copyright has expired as follows: | ||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||
1means the typographical arrangement and layout of a published work. eg. newsprint. 2owned means where a government is the copyright owner as well as would have owned copyright but reached some other agreement with the creator. |
explains it in a bit more detail. Basically, copyright has expired on any photo taken in Australia before 1955. The NLA's notice is out of date. — Moondyne 02:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Re the above, that is fascinating. Does the same rule apply to photos taken in GB before 1955? If so, I will start downloading some. --BlackJack | talk page 09:38, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- No, unfortunately not, only photos taken in Australia. Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:56, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Pity. What is the rule re British photos? Is there a cutoff date or are they all subject to copyright for evermore? --BlackJack | talk page 10:09, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- I have bookmarked this PDF — http://www.museumscopyright.org.uk/private.pdf — which (if accurate) suggests that it's 70 years after the death of the photographer, if the photographer is known, or else 70 years after first publication. So photos published before 1936 would be OK if the photographer is not known. Stephen Turner (Talk) 17:02, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- The real reference is the Copyright Act (as amended) and statutory instruments made under that Act (which in turn apply EU directives). I believe Stephen is right though - it's 70 years after the death of the photographer, if known - otherwise from 1 January following the date on which it was taken, if unknown (with this date changing to 70 years after the death of the photographer if you later learn who he was). jguk 18:32, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories for Delete/Merge/Rename
To list a category for deletion, merging or renaming, follow this process:
I. |
Preliminary steps.
Determine whether the category needs deleting, merging, or renaming.
|
II. |
Edit the category.
Add one of the following tags at the top of the category text.
Place the merger tag in the category that is being removed and write the name of the receiving category in "other category". "Cfd section name" is optional but use it because it is the name of the section on the deletion discussion page: use something like "Category X to Category Y"
|
III. |
Create the Cfd subsection.
Click on THIS LINK to edit the section of CFD for today's entries. Follow the instructions in the comments (visible during edit), to copy and paste the template shown. All categories are specified without the Category: prefix.
|
[edit] Notes for nominators
Once you have submitted a category here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is supported, helpful administrators and editors will log the result, and ensure that the change is populated to all affected pages.
Also, consider adding to your watchlist any categories you nominate. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not removed by a vandal.
[edit] Notes on discussions
Anonymous users may nominate and comment on proceedings. If they lack edit history, comments and votes from anonymous or new users may be discounted. See Wikipedia:Sock puppetry and Wikipedia:Suffrage for details.
Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion Category:Categories for merging, or Category:Categories for renaming, but accidentally not be listed here. They will be re-listed on a new day as they are noticed.
[edit] Redirecting categories
It is our general policy to delete categories that do not have articles in them. Unlike articles, categories are mostly for internal use only. If they don't have any articles, they shouldn't have any links from any articles or any other categories, because they are not useful for navigation and classification.
However, some categories frequently have articles assigned to them accidentally, or are otherwise re-created over and over again. In these cases, we use a form of "soft" redirection.
Categories cannot be redirected using "hard" redirects (#REDIRECT [[target]]) due to limitations in the MediaWiki software. Instead, use {{category redirect|target}}. Helpful bots patrol these categories and move articles into the redirect targets.
You can see a list of redirected categories in Category:Wikipedia category redirects.
[edit] How to list pages for deletion
This page describes how to list for deletion articles and their associated talk pages. See the related pages for templates, categories, redirects, stub types, pages in the Wikipedia namespace, user pages, or images and other media, or use copyright violation where applicable. As well, note that deletion may not be needed for problems such as pages written in foreign languages, duplicate pages, and other cases.
Note: Users must be logged in to complete steps II and III.
To list a single article for deletion for the first time, follow this three-step process:
I. |
Put the deletion tag on the article.
Insert the {{subst:afd1}} tag at the top of the page.
(If the article has been nominated for deletion before, use {{subst:afdx}} instead of {{subst:afd1}}. See Template Talk:afdx. This does not include articles that have only had the {{prod}} tag removed.) |
II. |
Create the article's deletion discussion page.
The resulting AfD box at the top of the article should contain a link to "Preloaded debate" in the AfD page.
OR
|
III. |
Notify users who monitor AfD discussion.
replacing PageName appropriately.
(If you used template {{subst:afdx}} instead of {{subst:afd1}}, use "PageName (2nd nomination)" instead of "PageName" for a second nomination, etc.). |
To list multiple related pages for deletion see here.
WikiProject User scripts may have some scripts to streamline these steps.
Once listed, deletion discussions can, optionally, also be transcluded into an appropriate deletion sorting category, such as the ones for actors, music, academics, or for specific countries; which helps attract people familiar with a particular topic area. Please see the list of categories.
- It is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the article that you are nominating the article. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the article and/or use TDS' Article Contribution Counter. For your convenience, you may use {{subst:AFDWarningNew|Article title}} (for creators who are totally new users), {{subst:AFDWarning|Article title}} (for creators), or {{subst:Adw|Article title}} (for contributors or established users).
- To avoid confusing newcomers, the reasons given for deletion should avoid Wikipedia-specific acronyms.
- Place a notification on significant pages that link to your nomination, to enable those with related knowledge to participate in the debate.
- If recommending that an article be speedily deleted, please give the criterion or criteria that it meets, such as "A7" or "non-notable biography".
