[edit] History

Blatnica is an important archaeological site, where Slavic tumuli with many precious artifacts (such as the famous Blatnica Sword) from the 8th and 9th centuries have been found. The site gave name to the Blatnica-Mikulčice Horizon (culture). A medieval royal castle existed in Blatnica from the 13th century until its abandonment in 1790. The ruins of the castle are still visible.

[edit] Blatnica Castle

Blatnica Castle (Slovak: Blatnický hrad) is a Gothic castle, whose ruins are situated 2 kilometers from Blatnica. The castle was built in the 13th century in order to protect a major trade route running from Nitra to the north. Soon after, it became a royal castle, but the kings lost their interest in the castle's development after a new route, through Mošovce and Martin was built. The new owners of Blatnica Castle, the Révay family (since 1540), were more generous and the castle was significantly extended in the second half of the 16th century. The last reconstruction is dated to 1744. In 1790, the castle was abandoned.

[edit] Culture and people

First Slovak female botanist Izabela Textorisová lived in Blatnica and her rich herbarium contains plants of the nearby Tlstá mountain. Textorisová's house as well as the museum of ethnographer, filmmaker, and photographer Karol Plicka are open to public. Other places of interest include two manor houses from the 18th century, a Classicist Lutheran church and many well-preserved rural houses.
