[edit] History
Blacktown station opened in 1860 with the construction of the Main Western railway line[1]. The station recived a major rebuild in the 1990s to a modern glass and steel structure with the addition of an extra platform and the provision of lift access to all platforms.
[edit] Platforms and service
- Platforms 1 and 2 are an island platform offset at an angle from the other five platforms. These platforms serve trains to and from the Richmond branch line, although there is the capacity to terminate 'down' trains there to return towards the city.
- Platform 3 is a side platform and is a newer addition to Blacktown, built to increase the terminating capacity of the station. It is usually used for terminating services from the city, although it has the capacity to be used for 'up' trains (towards Sydney).
- Platforms 4 and 5 are an island platform on the 'Up Main' and 'Up Suburban' tracks, and are usually used for 'Up' (towards Sydney) trains, although there is the capacity to terminate trains on either platform.
- Platforms 6 and 7 are an island platform on the 'Down Main' and 'Down Suburban' tracks, and are usually used for 'Down' (away from Sydney) trains There is the capacity to terminate 'Down' trains on platform 6 and return the towards the city, but not on platform 7. Trains to the Blue Mountains and beyond usually use platform 7.
