Black Tambourine

Black Tambourine (of Silver Spring, Maryland) were one of the earliest Slumberland groups in the early 1990s (see 1990s in music).

Black Tambourine was a twee pop (a branch of indie pop) band from Washington, D.C, influenced by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, Love, The Ramones, the Shop Assistants, The Pastels, 14 Iced Bears, Orange Juice, and the English bands signed to Creation Records.

The members of Black Tambourine came to the project already acquainted with each other:

  • Nelson was in Whorl;
  • Schulman was in Whorl, Powderburns, and co-founded Slumberland Records;
  • Moore was in Velocity Girl;
  • Berry had co-founded Chickfactor 'zine.

  • Berry went on to sing with numerous bands, including The Shapiros, glo-worm, Castaway Stones, Veronica Lake, Bright Colored Lights, Belmondo, Seashell Sea, and The Pines; she also returned to Chickfactor;
  • Nelson went on to Velocity Girl;
  • Moore went on to Heartworms;
  • Schulman went on to Magpies and Candleman.
