Black River is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 1,285 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Black River is on the border of the Town of Le Ray and the Town of Rutland. The village is east of Watertown.

The area was first settled around 1806 by the erection of a mill on the south side of the Black River. Black River was previously called "Lockport," and grew to include both sides of the river as well as two small river islands.

In 1890, a large fire destroyed part of the village.

The community incorporated as a village in 1891, taking land from both Towns of Rutland and Le Ray.

Black River is located at 44°0′42″N, 75°47′41″W (44.011567, -75.794773)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (2.16%) is water.

The village is located adjacent to the Black River.

New York State Route 3 (Rutland Street) passes through the village and intersects New York State Route 342 west of the village.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,285 people, 521 households, and 373 families residing in the village. The population density was 274.1/km² (709.8/mi²). There were 556 housing units at an average density of 118.6/km² (307.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 91.98% White, 2.65% African American, 0.47% Native American, 2.72% Asian, 0.54% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.32% of the population.

There were 521 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $45,761, and the median income for a family was $54,236. Males had a median income of $36,058 versus $26,458 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,524. About 3.0% of families and 6.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
