[edit] Trivia

  • The episode title is a play on words to the phrase as black as coal, which is a reference to a very dark color or mood.
  • Cole proposes to Phoebe in this episode. Phoebe tells Cole that she never dreamed about being married when she was a child, but in the episode The Honeymoon's Over Phoebe tells Prue and Piper that she has.
  • Cole's demon half is vanquished and he becomes a full human in this episode.
  • Paige discovers that Cole's demon half is actually Belthazor. This is the beginning of her mistrust in Cole.
  • This episode shows that even a non-magical witch can scry.
  • The power stripping potion mentioned was first spoken of in the season three episode Exit Strategy.
  • After Cole explains he might not be able to regain control after embracing his demonic-half, he tells Phoebe she should have the Belthazor vanquish potion ready just in case. But in Look Who's Barking, Piper tried using that potion on Cole and it didn't work because he had himself magically protected from it.
  • The potion Piper and Paige create to destroy a demon using demon flesh was first used in the episode Sleuthing with the Enemy. In that episode Piper said, "Poor piggy-piggy" when putting the pig's foot into the cauldron. In this episode Paige says the same thing.
  • Piper asks Emma with annoyance "Who the hell are you?". She said this in almost exactly the same way to the crazy witch woman in All Hell Breaks Loose.
