Bjergsted

Bjergsted is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the west coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark. The municipality includes the islands of Sejrø and Nekselø, and covers an area of 138.62 km². It has a total population of 8,047 (2005). Its mayor is Gert Larsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Svebølle.

Neighboring municipalities are Tornved, Svinninge, and Dragsholm to the east, Kalundborg and Hvidebæk to the west, and Høng to the south. To the north is Sejrø Bay (Sejrø Bugt), the bay in which the islands of Sejrø and Nekselø are located. The municipality of Trundholm on the other side of Sejrø Bay is Bjergsted's municipal neighbor to the north, on account of the long spit of land known as Zealand's Point (Sjællands Odde), that sticks out into the Great Belt (Storebælt), the strait which separates Zealand from the island of Funen.

Ferry service at the town of Havnsø connects the municipality to the islands of Sejrø and Nekselø.

By January 1, 2007 Bjergsted municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Gørlev, Hvidebæk, Høng, and Kalundborg municipalities to form a new Kalundborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 598 km² and a total population of 48,697 (2005).
