Bistra, Maramureş

Bistra (Ukrainian: Петрова бистра/Petrovabisztra) is a commune in Maramureş County, Romania. Aside from the main locality of Bistra, it contains the two villages of Valea Vişeului and Crasna Vişeului. The Ukrainian border is located to the north of the commune.

According to the 2002 census, the commune has a population of 4,423 inhabitants, of which 90.9% are Ukrainians, 9.0% Romanians and 0.1% other ethnicity. Due to the fact that Ukrainians make up the majority of the population, the Ukrainian language has co-official status alongside Romanian in Bistra, with signage, education, access to justice and public services provided in both languages.
