The Bishop of Dorchester was the head of the Anglo-Saxon Roman Catholic diocese of Dorchester, with his seat, or cathedra, at the cathedral in Dorchester-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.

[edit] History

The cathedral at Dorchester was founded in 634 by the Roman missionary, Saint Birinus. It was the seat of the Bishop of Wessex, which was moved to Winchester in 660. It again became the seat of a bishop, in around 675, when the Mercian Bishop of Leicester transferred his seat there. The bishops were subsequently known as Bishops of Dorchester. The diocese merged with that of Lindsey in 971 and its seat moved to Lincoln, with the bishops becoming Bishops of Lincoln, in 1072.
