Bishop Lynch High School of Dallas is a co-educational Catholic high school (grades 9-12) in east Dallas, Texas (USA). It opened in 1963 with 365 students and now has over 1,200[citation needed] students.

Academics rank with high priority, with over 30 dual-enrolled and AP opportunities.

The school mascot is a Friar and the colors are black and white. Throughout the years, the school has had a well known football team and has won one TCIL and five TAPPS state championships. Their principal rivals are Dallas Jesuit and Nolan Catholic High School.

Since it considers itself as the fine arts center of the Dallas Catholic secondary schools, Bishop Lynch sports a symphonic and jazz band, marching band, eight award-winning choirs, an excellent dance program, brigade, and an extensive visual arts program, all of which participate in TPSMEA competitions yearly. The school has a score of all-region and all-state band and choir members. In addition, the spring musical of Bishop Lynch draws a significant portion of the student body as participants either in cast, crew, or costume.

The school motto is "Veritas" which means "truth" in Latin.

It was designated a Blue Ribbon School by the Texas Department of Education in 1991 and 1998.

[edit] History

[edit] Origination

  • In 1962 Bishop Lynch High School is founded in honor of Bishop Joseph Lynch.
  • At its inception, the school was divided into a boys' school and girls' school, divided down the middle of its square floor plan.

[edit] Student Body

[edit] Campus

The Bishop Lynch campus is a very spacious campus. It was built with three hallways, Ferguson Hall, the Science Hall, and Inadale hall. Later on Heritage Hall was built branching off of Ferguson Hall. Ferguson and Inadale hall are separated by the courtyard which is in the center of the three main halls. In this courtyard is a greenhouse, the golf garden (cleaned and maintained by the golfers), and a memorial to all those that have attended Bishop Lynch and have died.

The Atrium is where all the artwork is displayed, and where students congregate every morning and afternoon. In the center of the Atrium is the Chapel, built fairly recently. Students may go there either for confession or a shortened version of the mass during Channel 1 time. The gym is fairly modern and has over 60 of Bishop Lynch's victory banners. It has facilities for both boys, girls, and teams.

Next is the VPA (Visual Performing Arts) center. This is where all the art, health, and dance classes take place. Right next door to the VPA is the band hall.

There are four different fields for BL. The first is the softball field located at the other end of the school. It is commonly used as a practice field by the band, colorguard, and soccor team during the summer. The second is the actual baseball field located behind the football stadium and to the left of the football practice field. The stadium is large and is where the soccer, football, and track teams play, and where the band, colorguard, and brigade perform.

[edit] Academics

It was designated a Blue Ribbon School by the Texas Department of Education in 1991 and 1998.

Bishop Lynch offers over 30 Dual-Enrollment and Advanced Placement Course opportunities. Dual Enrollment classes allow college credit to be earned in the high school classroom in association with Eastfield College.

The school runs on an academic block schedule with A days and B days. Each day consists of four 90 minute classes which meet every other day, with eight classes in all. This scheduling structure allows for more intensive, comprehensive, and concentrated classes. The students also enjoy the additional homework time, since there's no such thing as "assigned today, due tomorrow."

[edit] Notable Alumni

  • Ryan Moats, 02', Running Back for Philadelphia Eagles
  • Richard (Ritchie) Martin, class of 1985, won a Grammy Award during ceremonies on Sunday, February 11, 2007. This is a project that Mr. Martin began working on about ten years ago, researching and collecting old wax cylinders. He would remaster them and record them on cd.

[edit] Athletics

The Bishop Lynch Wrestling program is nationally recognized—As of now they are ranked second in the nation.

Bishop Lynch is also home to the legendary girls basketball team, which can prove its status with 6 championships in the last 6 years and 24 overall. These are both national records for the most consecutive state championships, as well as most overall.
